The week was simple. We strolled through the wilds of Big Sur on hikes, soaked in the natural mineral hot springs, ate good wholesome food, communed with ourselves, others, and nature... and celebrated Interdependence Day on the 4th. Once again, I am so grateful for how we all came together to experience the wilds — both inner and outer.

The Way of Nature: The Practice of the Wild

What a journey! I have a whole new meaning to the "practice of the wild." I so appreciate how we each so uniquely showed up this week for such a full range of experiences — both expected and unexpected. For some very clear moments I felt deeply supported while supporting... and for this I am grateful to you all.

This is a time for fathers and sons to come together as individuals, family, and community to explore the natural wild areas of Big Sur and the relationship of father and son in a community of men... and so it shall be.

Middlebury Fellowship: April 2012

Every year for the last five years I have had the pleasure of taking a group of up and coming environmental journalist out on a hike into the Big Sur. The program is part of the Middlebury Fellowship for Environmental Journalism and is led by authors Bill McKibben and Christopher Shaw. This year author Rebecca Solnit was once again one of the faculty members.

Esalen Office Goes Wild

The Esalen Office in Big Creek

Always a good reminder to listen to my own words...

"Wildness, rich diversity, and the dramatic meeting of edges — both inner and outer — converge to create the place we call Big Sur. Here the elements meet, greet, and co-create. Fire, Air, Earth, and Water come together in a manner so clearly on display that we have no choice but to come to our senses and awaken in our human body."

Each year I take the Esalen Office crew out for a hike in the wilds. I do this in gratitude for the hard work they do day in and day out. They, along with many other people, are the ones that make it possible for me to do what I do. And... it is always good to re-mind myself as I remind others to "come to our senses and awaken in our human body."

On this extra "leap" day of the year I find myself once again appreciating the ride we are on. The earth itself (and all of us on it) are flying around the sun at 66,600 mph. Even at this speed we don't quite make our full journey around the sun. It actually takes us about 365.25 days to make the full circle. Through the Julian and then Gregorian calendar we added in a day every forth year. Different cultures use other ways of counting the days, seasons, years, and marking time.

Even though it is not quite the case... I like to think of today as a "extra" day that we are all gifted — a good time to ask the question that poet Mary Oliver asks in one of her poems — "What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

Or framed for today, "What is it you are doing/being with your one wild and precious day?"

A Bit of History

Before Esalen Institute was formed in 1962, there was Big Sur Hot Springs. This is a photo of the entrance from Highway 1. Very little landscaping or development had been done at the time.

My friend Jeff Kripal and Scott Jones are working on a documentary about Esalen. Here are links to learn more about their project:

Time to Saunter... a la Muir

One day as I was resting in the shade Mr. Muir overtook me on the trail and began to chat in that friendly way in which he delights to talk with everyone he meets. I said to him: "Mr. Muir, someone told me you did not approve of the word 'hike.' Is that so?" His blue eyes flashed, and with his Scotch accent he replied: "I don't like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not hike!

"Do you know the origin of that word 'saunter?' It's a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, "A la sainte terre,' 'To the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them."

As I reflect back on our week, so many strong images and sensations come to mind and body. The crisp clarity of the fresh falling water of Conoga Falls can still be felt stirring inside my body, "...waking the bones. Whispering, Oh, what is that beautiful thing that just happened." 

I appreciated the range of deep silence to dives into the curiosities of the natural world and all it's wonders. Thanks for everyone's willingness to jump into the adventure and the discovery.

The Art of Pilgrimage: Green Gulch Zen Center 2011

On the path... 

Here is a version of the Zen story that Jeremy told from the "Book of Serenity"

Zen Teacher Earth Treasury asked the monk Dharma Eye as he was leaving the monastery, "Where are you going?"
Dharma Eye said, "I am going on pilgrimage."
Earth Treasury said, "What is the purpose of pilgrimage?"
Dharma Eye said, "I don't know."Earth Treasury said, "Not knowing is most intimate."
Dharma Eye was greatly awakened at these words.

We were blessed with a perfect day, incredible views, and a community of 'pilgrims' on the path. I am so touched to see both new and familiar faces from Esalen, Tassajara, and Green Gulch.

My hope and intention of offering this retreat was and is to explore what meaningful contemporary pilgrimage might be, to build community, and deepen our connection to place. All of my hopes and intentions for the day were met. I am filled with gratitude and hope to see you all again next year, if not sooner.

The Art of Pilgrimage: Vallecitos July 2011

"'What is the purpose of pilgrimage?' asked the teacher. 'I don't know,' responded the student. 'Not knowing is most intimate.' said the teacher."

Most intimate is how I would describe our time together as a group and in the wilds around Vallecitos Mountain Ranch. Deep gratitude for how you all showed up so fully to make our time together so special. I especially appreciated the heartfelt presence from and for those in such potent times of transition. Wishing that we each walk with some gems from our pilgrimage to grow and integrate in our daily lives. Thanks to the Vallecitos staff (Carl, Matt, & Leigh) for providing the support for our pilgrimage.

There is nothing quite like spring at Tassajara… emergent green, wildflowers, cold creek crossing, the beginning of Guest Season, fresh trails, good food, the lingering wildness of winter.

For more than 30 years I have been making my annual “pilgrimage” over to Tassajara. Each year my relationship to the place and these mountains deepens. I am honored to lead with Abbot Myogen Steve Stücky and to have so many people join us this year.

Grand Canyon at Sunrise

While in college at Northern Arizona University, the Grand Canyon became one of the first places as an adult I clearly fell in love with the wilds. I would make regular trips up to the canyon to explore different trails.

I first visited the Canyon at 7 years old on a family trip west. At 14 I hiked to the bottom and back in a day with a friend that did all 16 miles barefoot. College days was about exploring. Later I planted trees on the north rim. And much later I worked as a boatman running the full length of the Canyon on the Colorado River on numerous trips.

Returning recently for a short visit reminded me once again how easy it is to fall in love with this open expansive space.

Here's to hoping we all keep falling in love with the wilds.

Snow in Big Sur

Esalen Hot Springs with snow in the mountains

Most years we will get more than a few storms that leave snow in the higher elevations of Big Sur (2,500 feet and up), but only a few times in the last 30 years have we seen snow to sea level. Now to be clear, the snow was not sticking, but very wet flakes were making it to sea level in a few locations. Today's "snow storm" was unusual because it was snowing while the sun was out in many locations!

Spotted Owls

Spotted Owl

We have a Spotted Owl living in the canyon next to our house. I hear it in the evening and early morning when it is still dark. The other day it spent some time out in the open daylight. For a bird that is known to be "shy" and nocturnal, it seemed quite curious on this day. 

The Spotted Owl is often split into three sub-species. While the Northern Spotted Owl and Mexican Spotted Owl are both listed and 'theatended' on the Endangered Species List, the California Spotted Owl is not. It is, however, of considerable interest as it is one measure of a healthy ecosystem. Their preferred habitat appears to be a multilayered forest with some old growth and a dense canopy.

Most of all, each time I hear the call of 'our' local Spotted Owl something deep inside me stirs... a soft smile and easy breath comes — I am remind of the wildness I am surrounded by and feel a bit more alive.
